Where to start

Some things get lighter the moment they're said.

Most people aren't sure therapy is "for them" until they've had a first conversation. Start with a free 15-minute call. There's no pressure to book anything after it.

No GP referral needed
Confidential, from the first call
Stop or pause whenever you like

How it works

Four steps. You lead each one.

1

Tell us a little

A two-minute form with your name, how to reach you and what's on your mind.

2

Free 15-min call

A relaxed chat to hear what's going on and answer your questions.

3

First session

Fifty minutes, online or by phone. Talk about what brought you here.

4

Your pace

Weekly or fortnightly, for as long as it helps. Stop at any time.

Common questions

Your first session

Nervous? That's normal.

You set the pace

There's no script. Start with whatever feels easiest, even "I don't know where to begin."

It stays in the room

Sessions are confidential. The rare limits are explained at the start, in plain language.

Ask anything

How therapy works, what the approach is, what happens next.

No commitment

At the end you decide whether to continue. If it doesn't feel right, that's fine.

Two CBT tools to keep in your pocket.

S.T.O.P.P.

  1. SStop. Pause before you react.
  2. TTake a breath. Slow, and into your belly.
  3. OObserve. What am I thinking and feeling right now?
  4. PPull back. Is this fact or opinion? What would I tell a friend?
  5. PPractise what works. What's the most helpful thing to do next?

Where CBT starts

  1. 1Ground first. Name five things you can see and feel your feet on the floor.
  2. 2Remind yourself: this is a memory. It isn't happening now.
  3. 3Approach one thing you've been avoiding, slowly.
  4. 4Write down the belief, then the evidence against it.

Common questions

Good to know.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can get in touch directly. If you're already seeing your GP or another service, you're welcome to mention it.

Is it confidential?

Yes. What you share stays between you and Zan. The only exceptions are rare situations where someone's safety is at serious risk, and these are explained at your first session.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on you and what you'd like to work on. Some people find a handful helpful; others prefer longer-term support. You can review it at any point.

What if it's not the right fit?

That's okay. The free call lets you get a feel for things first, and you're never tied in after a session.

Is online as good as in person?

Many people find online and phone sessions just as helpful, and easier to fit into life. You can try one and switch later.

How much does it cost?

Fees are explained on your free call before you book anything, so there are no surprises.

Your privacy

How the check-in on this website handles what you share. Last updated October 2026.

Who is responsible

Zan, trading as The Talking Therapist, is responsible for the information you send. Contact: zan.talkingtherapy@gmail.com.

What you share

Your first name, email address and, if you choose, phone number; the feelings you pick; how strong they are and how long you've felt them; the topics you'd like help with; anything you write in your own words; and how and when you'd like to talk.

Why

Only to understand how you're feeling before your free 15-minute call and to contact you to arrange it. Because some of this is health information, it is only processed with your explicit consent, which you give by ticking the box before sending. It is never used for marketing.

Where it goes

When you press Send, your check-in is emailed to Zan through Resend, an email delivery service, and is not stored on this website. While you're filling it in, your answers are kept only in your own browser so you don't lose them; they're cleared once you send, or when you choose Start fresh.

How long it's kept

Zan keeps your check-in only as long as needed to arrange and provide support, in line with professional record-keeping guidance, and then deletes it.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete your information, or withdraw consent, at any time by emailing Zan. If you're unhappy with how your information is handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

Not an emergency service

If you need help right now, call 999, Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24/7), or NHS 111 option 2.
